A render of a notch-equipped next-gen MacBook Pro via MacRumors. The story seems to have started with a Chinese Weibo user claiming that the new MacBook Pro would include a notch. Its size is “comparable to the iPhone 12”, according to reports. The report could be just a joke, according to “DuanRui,” a Twitter user who frequently posts information about Apple’s plans from Weibo. However, a Reddit user with no background has now made the same claim, claiming to have spoken with sources in the supply chain.
While the claim might seem laughable at first, the Redditor pointed to MacRumors’ conclusion that the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros will feature resolutions of 3024 by 1964 and 3456 by 2234. Subtracting 74 pixels from the height of the two, the 3024 by 1890 and 3456 by 2160 equates to an aspect ratio of 16:10. All of Apple’s current MacBooks have an aspect ratio of 16:10, so with a height of 74 pixels for a notch, that point seems plausible.
Even with a notch at the top of the screen, Apple wouldn’t have been able to give the MacBook Pro four bezels of equal width. This notch design is also apparently planned for the 2022 redesigned MacBook Air.
The iPhone 11’s TrueDepth camera array, known colloquially as “notch.” remember Face ID and eyeglasses of equal size.
Another rumor mentioned in the Reddit post and on Weibo claims that the entire keyboard area of the new MacBook Pros is black, rather than just the keys, in what is “probably the biggest visual change to the keyboard since the redesign of Unibody over a decade ago. ”There’s also the not unreasonable claim that MacBook Pros will get thicker and have bigger fans.
