Ontario is going through a housing crisis. We have the lowest number of housing units per capita of any G7 country, and prices for new construction and existing homes have increased. In July, the average selling price of a single-family home in the GTA increased 21.7%. Prices for semi-detached and row houses have also increased. The lack of inventory also led to bidding wars for existing homes and rentals.

Ontario produces about 25,000 less homes per year than our demographic needs. Waiting lists for social housing have never been longer. Thousands of young families cannot find housing. Until the system is repaired, MZOs are an appropriate intervention in housing-related situations.

The government introduced Bill 197 and an improved MZO, in the face of a rapidly evolving pandemic. The aim was to cut red tape and speed up the development of essential projects that contribute to our security. We cannot allow red tape to put our health and safety at risk.

MZOs serve a purpose under the right circumstances, and it is often the municipalities that have often asked the Ministry of Housing to intervene.
