Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed Tottenham Hotspur are best placed to capitalize on the growing popularity of the NFL in the UK and Europe.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been specially designed to host NFL games, using artificial turf under the retractable football pitch.

Spurs have agreed a 10-year staging deal worth £40m to host two regular season matches at their stadium each year, which started in 2019.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been three games canceled in recent years and The daily mail reported in February that the Spurs were negotiating a two-year extension to their contract with the NFL, which will see two games a year hosted on their ground until 2031.

This week, TVI announced that it has entered into a three-year partnership with the NFL which grants the media giants exclusive rights to broadcast matches in the UK, including the right to broadcast matches at Tottenham Stadium.

Maguire believes the sport’s popularity will only grow and suggested Spurs have an unassailable edge over the rest in their bid to become the home of the NFL in the UK.

He told Football Insider: “Spurs are in position A when it comes to the growing profile of the NFL outside of the United States.

“They provided a fantastic experience for people who came to watch the games in the UK. It’s a beautiful stadium and it brings positive vibes to the United States.

“The players also seem to like it. I think that’s just as important. So, all stakeholders, including broadcasters and commercial partners, are absolutely thrilled with what they’ve seen from Spurs so far.

“I think it would be very difficult to dislodge Spurs from being in that privileged position in the future.”

Boosts web opinion

Daniel Levy’s decision to have a retractable pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was a stroke of genius. Although this has resulted in a massive increase in the cost of the stadium, it also gives us a substantial advantage over all other football clubs in England.

In addition to NFL games, the number of concerts and other sporting events held at the site will only increase over the next few years. That means our stadium revenue is set to eclipse that of every other club in the country for years and decades to come.
